What is a death age calculator?

A death age calculator estimates how old you will probably be when you die. It starts from the official life expectancy in your country, adjusts for the age you have already reached, and then for habits that research shows make a real difference — smoking, weight, alcohol, exercise, sleep and diabetes.

Instead of a single number, you also get a likely range. That matters: two people with identical answers can die decades apart. The range shows where the middle half of people like you end up.

How to raise your death age

  • Don’t smoke, or quit. Quitting before 40 avoids about 90% of the extra risk of dying early.
  • Move 2.5–5 hours a week. Brisk walking counts and is linked to about 31% lower risk of death.
  • Keep a BMI of roughly 20–25 and get diabetes, if you have it, well controlled.
  • Drink 7 or fewer drinks a week and sleep 7–8 hours a night.

Your result’s “Ways to add years” section shows how much each of these would add for you specifically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average age of death?

Worldwide, a baby born today can expect to live about 73.5 years (71.1 for men and 76.0 for women, World Bank 2024). But that average includes deaths in childhood. People who reach adulthood live longer: an average 40-year-old woman worldwide can expect to reach about 80.

At what age do most people die?

In high-income countries, the most common age of death is in the mid-to-late 80s, and it is a few years later for women than for men. In countries where many children die young, the average is pulled down a lot, even though adults there also often live into their 70s.

Why does my estimated death age go up as I get older?

Because you have already survived the risks of the years behind you. Each year you live removes some of the chances of dying young, so your expected age at death rises a little every year — that is why the table above climbs from left to right.

Do I need to enter my height and weight?

No, they are optional. Without them, weight simply has no effect on your result.

Is the death age calculator accurate?

It gives a statistically grounded average for people like you, not a prediction for you personally. The likely range shows the uncertainty: half of people with your answers die within it. See how it works.
