Worldwide life expectancy has risen from 50.9 years in 1960 to 73.5 in 2024, thanks mainly to fewer deaths among children, vaccines, clean water and better treatment of heart disease and infections.

Frequently asked questions

Which country has the highest life expectancy?

Monaco, at 86.5 years (2024, World Bank), followed by San Marino (85.8), Hong Kong (85.4), Kuwait (84.6), Switzerland (84.4).

Which country has the lowest life expectancy?

Nigeria, at 54.6 years — about 31.9 years less than Monaco.

Why do women live longer than men?

Women live longer in almost every country. Part of the reason is biological, and part is behaviour: on average men smoke and drink more, take more risks and have more work-related and road accidents. Worldwide the gap is about 4.9 years.

What does “life expectancy at birth” mean?

It is how long a baby born this year would live on average if today’s death rates stayed the same for its whole life. It is not the age at which most adults die — people who survive childhood live longer than this average. See your own estimate with the death clock.
